Posing 101: The Most Useful Tips On How to Pose

When it comes to the topic of posing, most of my clients get intensely intimidated. "I have no idea what to do," or "I don't know what looks good," or "I don't know how to be sexy" are all common phrases I hear when discussing expectations with my clients. I get it, being sexy is quite a vulnerable act I'm asking from women, especially because most often they're strangers! But even though I believe sexiness and that sultry energy I love capturing is something innately within each of us, there are some general rules and tips I like to use during my shoots that make you and your body look absolutely incredible.

All the images used in this post are completely unedited and, in my opinion, breathtaking as-is. They're all from the same test shoot with my model-friend Denka, who's an absolute joy to shoot because she exudes femininity, grace, beauty, confidence, sexiness, movement, softness and strength. In an effort to keep this article positive, I'd love to share my favorite "Do's" of posing and show you how you can apply each tip and take your photo from being stunning to magazine-worthy!

DO:

1. Elongate your body using extremities: In practicality, what this looks like is extending your arms or legs to the sides or toward the camera. With these angles, your body appears extra long and free of creases / folds that you feel extra self-conscious about.

These next three are a great example of this concept. If you're looking ONLY at the body and not the overall feel of the images, you can clearly see how the extension of the legs creates a leaner and longer perception of Denka's gorgeous body. Simply by extending her legs and propping herself up, she gives the illusion of an even longer body when looking at these from left to right. Personally though, I adore the vibe of the picture of the left, so that's the one I'd choose out of a bunch.

2. Keep your toes pointed. This is related to the previous tip but it's a simple way to lengthen your legs even further. It's a small but noticeable difference.

3. Laugh! It doesn't get much simpler than this. I often ask my clients to start laughing and beside being a bit weird to start laughing out of nowhere, it makes for natural, fun and beautiful photographs where your beauty really shines through. Once the laughing starts, it gets to be so ridiculous that we end up laughing for a long period of time - hence the not-so-focused shots :)

4. Lean forward. This reminds me of the sticker on car mirrors that reads, "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear." In this case, "Whatever is closest to the camera appears biggest." What that means is that it's typically better to lean your upper body forward and/or toward the camera so that your waist, hips and legs appear smallest IF flattery is what you're going for.

5. Use props to cover, play and/or get variety. Props such as pillows, sheets and t-shirts are quite useful and make for sexy photos.

6. Create shapes and move. This isn't the time to be shy or coy - instead, push your boobs together, create tons of cleavage, arch your back, throw your head back and use your arms to create space away from your body!

Arch........

Arch........

....... That back! Ahhh there it is :)

....... That back! Ahhh there it is :)

7. FLIRT. A boudoir session is an intimate experience where you get to let your inner vixen play and be seen. It's a set time where you get to experience yourself as a sensual being and discover what that looks like. With that said, I know it's easier said that done and that this is probably the hardest tool to sharpen. But like I tell all the women I work with, this session is for YOU. Use it as a time where you explore your body, feel and do what feels sexy to you, and get your flirt on. If giving these images as a gift, believe me, your special someone wants to see you get lost in your own sensuality. And if doing this for yourself, you'll want to see and feel how gorgeous and freeing you look when you simply let go.

That's it for now! If you're interested in learning more about the boudoir experience and how to prepare for it, check out my Boudoir E-book! I hope these tips help ease any nerves you may have and inspire you to approach your shoot with lots of excitement!

With love,

Tutti

Above All, Be Grateful - Featuring Talia Sutra

Have you ever wondered where you come from? Like, really come from? Religious beliefs, personal philosophy and even some historical anecdotes might sway your answer, but regardless of what you belief, can we all agree for the purpose of this piece that the fact that we're here is a beautiful mystery? The fact that we must count of faith or stern personal belief to account for the most important part of our lives (being born) is the coolest joke played on us (in a great way). Here we are, born into human nature with insatiable curiosity yet the one thing we have no idea how to prove is the essence of our very existence. Joke's on us!

When I sat down with Talia Peretz, we covered SO many topics, from religion to suffering to beauty. One topic was the discussion of where we come from - our Source. In relation to talks about beauty, self-esteem, sexiness and self-worth, our Source is the center of it all.

boudoir.photography.nyc.tuttidelmonte

Now I don't want to get too religious or spiritual or whatever, because I actually don't even identify with a single group, but I want to share a truth Talia stated that I completely agree with.

Our Source - whatever you might call it - is beautiful, grand and perfect.

Therefore, as a direct extension of our Source, we, too, are beautiful, grand and perfect from the day we are born.

I hope I just blew your mind away as mine was blown when I felt this sink in as truth. It makes total sense in my head. For your entertainment, here’s a peek inside my brain: I imagine a huge galaxy full of stars and constellations that all of a sudden explodes and creates millions of new star dust, space matter and astronomical "stuff." The idea that there's star dust within me and everyone around me is something I can definitely live with. OK, fine, I'm talking metaphorically, but still, star dust rocks, pun intended.

Is the source where you come from good and beautiful? Then you, too, are made of goodness and beauty!

Now the difficult part is in knowing this when our minds try to tell us otherwise. As humans, our ability to think and analyze is what sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. But it's also what dooms us because our overthinking sometimes prevents us from being natural.

Our nature is to love, to be happy and to share love, which is truly beautiful.

//

There’s nothing more beautiful than being close to a natural state.

"What in the world does this all have to do with Boudoir by Tutti?" you may be wondering. Well, I happen to believe that being sexy comes from being confident in who you are, and what can bring this sense of knowing who you are more than knowing where you come from?

//

When we’re rooted to something, above and below, then we have a centeredness that we’re able to shine from.

//

boudoir.photography.nyc.newyork.tuttidelmonte

From a yoga standpoint, this is 100% spot on. In balancing poses like Tree Pose, for instance, you must be both actively grounding down with your standing leg and lifting up through the crown of your head in order to find that blissful balance. It’s exactly the same for how you live and how you choose to see yourself and the world. There’s a vast area within me that feels fuzzy and safe when I realize it’s ultimately up to me how I live my life.

I can be happy or not. You can be happy or not. It’s a choice. And to Talia, it’s also our only free will.

//

Our only choice that we can make is to find joy and to say thank you.

//

boudoir.photography.nyc.newyork.tuttidelmonte
boudoir.photography.nyc.newyork.tuttidelmonte

Choose Joy.

Choose Happiness!

Be Thankful that you’re here.

Appreciate the small things that remind you life is a miracle.

Connect to your Source.

Elevate your energy.

//

The more you elevate the energy around you, your perception of reality too will begin actually shifting, and then you'll be able to create a beauty that resonates with who you are.

//

My friends, if one single thing sinks in out of this entire article, let it be a feeling of freedom to be happy.

I want you to be happy - and would absolutely love for you to find it within - because that’s where you’ll find a bountiful, unlimited source of it at all times.

Approach the “within" with love... and all will follow.

My interview with Talia was beyond inspiring. It was actually quite hard organizing my thoughts into a single article because I had so many thoughts on it! If you haven’t already, I encourage you to listen to the audio recording above. It’s pretty much an audio version of an “Inspired” Pinterest board. It’ll leave you feeling happy, motivated and empowered. These are some of my favorite take-aways from our conversation. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do :)

Until next feature!

With love,

Tutti

My favorite quotes from Talia:

//

Beauty, more than anything, is about who you share it with.

//

//

I think its very important for women to realize that they’re beautiful, naturally, that they’re so beautiful.

//

//

Know that when you share your beauty - it’s a gift. What I’ve learned is that I can be myself and being yourself is the most beautiful thing.

//

//

There is something beautiful about realizing that every part of you is precious.

//

//

Beauty will come from inner choices not from outside influence

//

//

A huge part of living is suffering. Suffering happens so that we are able to lift up out of it and understand what it's like to have bliss and happiness.

//

//

It's usually very little things that are taken for granted - that's where the magic is.

//

//

Don’t be afraid of being yourself.

//

//

Anything that you express should be connected to the joy that you hopefully feel - to the joy that is all around you - to the miracle of existence.

//

//

Above all is to be grateful.

//

//

When it comes to the Source of all things, there’s a mystery to it, and that’s how it’s meant to be.

//

//

It’s everywhere - it's also beyond talking, beyond any rationality. it's the most eternal part of me.

//

//

It’s gratefulness, joy and then love and all is coming

LIVING SEXY IS... EMBRACING ALL OF WHO I AM

Strap in and get ready for this one, because I guarantee I’m about to take you for a ride!

Katherine Harris, a woman with many titles and many blessings, is the epitome of a fearless soul. There’s nothing she’s faced with that she doesn’t tackle with strength and grace. In running her blog, The Refined Woman, with her good friend Em, she touches thousands of lives and hearts - especially that of women.

When I met Katherine at a photo shoot, there was an instant connection between us. If you know just a little bit about me, you know I rarely (if ever) meet a stranger, so making friends has thankfully never been an issue. But this connection with Kat I speak about was something completely different - at the risk of sounding like a lunatic, we met for the first time a year ago but our souls had known each other for long before then. There, I said it! Ever since that day, Kat and I have been inseparable.

boudoirbytutti.nyc.lifestyle.katherineharris

We both want to spread a message of love, acceptance and strength to women and through photography, writing and yoga, we’ve carved a similar path for each of our individual journeys. I decided to feature Katherine because I especially know how draining our work can be and how it’s just as important to turn the camera around every once in a while to truly see how amazing this time in our life is.

As I mentioned earlier, Kat has many titles - photographer, writer, blogger, dreamer, volunteer - all paths that focus on giving. But for now, I want to allow this space to be for Katherine, for her to be able to receive all the energy, love and attention she constantly gives out.

In planning Katherine’s shoot, I knew I wanted to use the golden hour of Brooklyn’s spectacular sunset to complement the light and softness that Kat carries with her. If you ever have the pleasure of speaking with or listening to Kat as she talks about her passion for women, I’m 100% sure you’d be blown away. This is one of our favorite topics to discuss (and boys, obviously) because we’re each super okay with going deep into the subject at the risk of sounding like a broken record. But this is where Kat’s biggest blessing shows up - her ability to look inside and verbalize her innermost thoughts and feelings.

In terms of a sexy lifestyle, Kat admits it’s been an evolutionary concept for the past few years, going from being scared of “being a woman in a man’s world” to seeing womanhood as gift. Moreover, once she accepted and embraced all parts of who Katherine is - feminine, go-getter, athlete, strong, woman, dreamer, soft, vulnerable - is when she started connecting with other women from a grounded place of freedom.

//

Whenever we compartmentalize part of our lives, we shut down parts of our hearts.

Giving myself permission to fully be the person I was created to be… it's like it sets this spark - not only in my life but in the lives of those around me.

Free people free people.

//

It’s not easy being vulnerable in general, add to that a whole pool of social media followers looking in as dating anecdotes stream in from Kat’s personal life, and you’ve got yourself a juicy story. When I brought this up during our interview (listen above), Kat gave me the smartest answer I’ve ever heard about some of the most common dynamics between men and women (in the dating world).

//

As women, we have these questions we bring to the world, and a lot of time we bring to men:

Am I beautiful?

Am I sexy?

Am I valuable?

Do you want me?

Am I worthy?

For a long time, I wanted a man to answer those questions for me, and what I was doing was setting up every guy I dated for failure. No man was created to answers all my questions.

//

The lesson?

You have to know your worth before anyone else can affirm it.

boudoirbytutti.nyc.lifestyle.katherineharris

//

My worth, my identity, my value, who I am - I am perfect as I am today - no one’s answers but my own affect who I am right now.

//

So here’s to all of our female complexities, to our questions, to our dreams and to our desires - and may we all find that our true power as women is born in the very depth of our being.

boudoirbytutti.nyc.lifestyle.katherineharris
boudoirbytutti.nyc.lifestyle.katherineharris
boudoirbytutti.nyc.lifestyle.katherineharris

Thank you, Kat, for challenging us to be fearless in looking in so that we may allow others to find freedom and embrace all parts of them.

Love always,

Tutti
