LIVING SEXY IS... Being Yourself

When you hear people talk about people who light up a room when they walk in, they're referring to people like Kat Schamens. Not just "people like" but simply Kat Schamens. Dressed in sparkly, colorful clothing, Kat is utterly unafraid of what people might think. She is herself, through and through, and such truth and freedom shines upon everyone who lays eyes on her.

It was so easy to visit her where she teaches aerial yoga and produce this shoot because she's always on board for playfulness, fun and genuine connections. And speaking of genuine connections, she gave class to JAKE GYLLENGHAL! Listen to the interview to hear all about it! He might be the sexiest man in Hollywood right now, so the fact that I now have one degree of separation to him makes me a bit more giddy than my boyfriend would like to accept.

Back to Sparkles, as many call her. While putting together a new special project for mothers and daughters that I'll soon be offering, I started thinking of how important relationships between girl friends are at an early age. Think about it. Who were you friends with while growing up? What are your memories like with those gal pals? Whether good or bad, they're certainly impactful and meaningful. During my interview with Kat, we touched a bit on what she was like growing up, and I couldn't help but wonder if we'd be friends. Knowing what I now know and realizing the importance of positive role models and uplifters in life, I'm 100% confident that Kat is the type of girl that every girl needs to know.

Just by being around her, she allows me to feel loved, to be myself, to be silly, to be confident, to be real, to feel worthy and to feel special. And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, because I've heard the coldest of people express how much they love her. It's so ironic - and yet maybe not at all - that she created a line of glittery yoga apparel called "Katasana Apparel" that encourages people to "stay true to their inner sparkly self." It's ironic because that's what she demands of people regardless of what she's wearing, simply with her presence.

Whether you live in New York or not, where fashion choices have no guidelines, take this as a formal invitation to find your sparkly self - and then stay true to it. Again, living sexy and living with your truth have nothing to do with what you wear, it's 100% how you carry yourself, so be true to YOU, because, as Kat says, that's really the only thing we're meant to do on this earth.

If you or a friend might be interested in going through this beautiful journey of shooting with me and creating photos and a video together, subscribe to the blog and get in touch with me!!! There are many, many new projects that I can't wait to share with you, and I'm reaching out to all my sweet subscribers first to go through this experience together :) I honestly can't wait to tell you all about it and connect with many more people through these upcoming ventures.

Until then, stay beautiful, my friends, and don't be afraid to shine bright.

With love,

LIVING SEXY IS... Feeling Free

There comes a time in your life when you feel totally empowered, challenged and at ease with yourself. This was the feeling I got when I met Domenic Savino, this week’s Living Sexy feature.

I met Domenic about a year and a half ago when I went through yoga teacher training. He gives off SO MUCH ENERGY and demands the same from you. It’s likely you’ll hear one or two of his idioms during class, such as “Don’t ever let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do!” It’s also likely they’ll stick with you for the rest of your life.

Domenic embodies this idea of Living Sexy because of the beautiful blend of caring and non-attachment in which he carries himself. During our interview (audio file above), we talked about yoga, kindness, loving yourself and feeling great, among many other topics.

There was one phrase, though, that immediately stopped me in my tracks,

What makes you beautiful are the things that make you imperfect. That’s what makes you shine

I felt as if I was suddenly levitating, free from worldly and superficial attachments. YES! Imperfect is beautiful! You know why? Because there is NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT. Despite what media and society wants us to think, there is absolutely no one in this world who is perfect. And the sooner we accept that, the sooner we get to feel beautiful.

Let go of all non-physical insecurities as well. No more, "I'm not good enough, " "I'm not smart enough," "I'm not disciplined enough." Hush the negative talk, there is enough of that going around in the world for you to add to the noise when it comes to YOU. Replace all the "imperfect" chatter with positive and love-filled talk.

Even though I don't own or read the Bible, I found a tremendously powerful passage that reads,

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. - Luke 6:45

I bring this up because it's SO IMPORTANT to internalize positivity in order for it to translate into our external lives. Feeling imperfect is a slippery slope that breeds negative emotions in our hearts. The sooner we recognize how many daily opportunities we have to switch the chatter in our minds from negative to positive, the sooner our hearts will be able to catch up, heal and give us love instead of other nasty feelings such as jealousy, inadequacy, envy, bitterness, antipathy, resentment, animosity, spite, hatred, etc.

I'm so happy Domenic brought this up because I think it's really easy to get caught up in perfection when the truth is we already have everything we need to feel great / beautiful / sexy = LIFE. WE HAVE LIFE.

A huge thank you to Domenic for shedding light and sharing wisdom on this platform and during yoga class! You are so loved and so admired.

Everyone's assignment for today and the rest of the year (2015 is almost over, what!?) is to:

Every time you catch yourself belittling yourself or propagating negative thoughts about yourself, just switch it around. Simple as that. Even if you don't 100% believe it, I promise it WILL actually switch your heart. It may not be a flip of a switch, but with time, it will happen. I promise.

Thank you so much for reading this week's feature. I look forward to sharing a few more FUN posts before the end of the year so stay connected!

Here's the video from my shoot with Domenic.

Lots of love,

LIVING SEXY IS... Finding Your Resolve

I’ll go ahead and start by admitting this is uncharted waters for me. When I decided to start the series, Living Sexy Is, I didn’t imagine I’d one day interview men. Do men ever feel sexy? OF COURSE THEY DO, DUH! Maybe they use different terminology but we all certainly share the concept of feeling great. It only seems fair, then, that I open up this conversation to all.

Enter: Tomas Rodriguez, the easiest person to talk to you’ll ever meet.

So, despite being much more accustomed to photographing women, my shoot with Tomas was super easy-going and fun. Equal-parts-business-and-fun, I knew I wanted to incorporate an element that made him feel comfortable yet stud-like. Hello basketball in a suit!

It’s all fun and games until we sat down after our shoot and just talked (cue "The Shining”  track and splash the page with red paint that reads: GUYS’ WORST NIGHTMARE). Come on! It wasn’t that bad! It was actually SO good that I had too much content (55-minute interview) for this piece and had to redo it to fit your attention span.

SO. Here we are and I don’t even know where to begin!

It was truly refreshing getting a guys’ perspective on this subject. I feel like I don’t know about enough men who take time to simply ask themselves if they feel great. Sure, they may very well feel great, but do they stop and wonder where the feeling came from? Or how they can bottle it up? At the risk of sounding like a total girl, feelings matter, dammit! And it was nice to hear that Tomas agrees.

His idea of feeling sexy / feeling great admittedly most often starts with a surface-level assessment. A look good = feel good type of thing. But once the feeling is there, however fleeting, Tomas feels unstoppable. And I’m sure many men and women relate. This idea of adorning yourself in a way that makes you happy has the power to lift your entire self-esteem, thus allowing you to have this magical confidence we’ve been discussing in recent posts. Confidence stemming from surface-level elements, however, are subject to change at a moment’s notice.

I struggle with the idea of confidence, because I think sometimes it’s temporary, or sometimes it’s fleeting.

The ideal counterpart to the waves of life would be to have a steady, rock-solid base from which this confidence stems from.

There is this little resolve, a foundation within you, that you can always go back to.

And, in Tomas’ opinion, finding your personal resolve, is what it’s all about. That’s freaking sexy, in MY opinion.

During our interview, we touched on many points. Confidence. Happiness. Self-Discovery. Practice. Uncertainty. Self-Awareness. Helping Others.

My mind was blown as soon as Tomas mentioned an old gem passed down from his mother, "If you can’t figure out a way to help yourself, just go find someone else and help them." SOMEONE ELSE? What?! You mean it’s not all about me when things aren’t going MY way? Preposterous!

How can it be that I had never thought of that? That I’m in my head so much that I’ve failed to consider those around me as a possible way to make any situation better? The answer is written within the very question, “I’m in my head” (add: too much). It’s a mind-blowing concept, but one that I will definitely start practicing. Don’t you think it’s beautiful? That we may each be able to “figure our shit out” by letting go of it and instead being self-less?

Maybe in moments of turmoil it’d great to open up your eyes and try to find - with practice - opportunities to help others.

There’s so much information out there on how to be the best at this or that, how to know your strengths and weaknesses, how to maximize your time, how to get to know yourself so you may excel at being YOU, but what if all this is somehow getting in the way of the ultimate goal? What Tomas was explaining as his idea of Living Sexy is this: Being happy can bring confidence, and getting to know yourself can bring said happiness and confidence. But life doesn’t work in this black and white, easy mathematical way. It has ups and downs and twists and turns, so the confidence, happiness and inner wisdom you feel right now may very well disappear within an instant. And being shaken up but riding the wave is what Living Sexy is all about: being OK with the mystery of life will come as long as your foundation is solid, and not being too self-involved in your own journey that you neglect to help others in theirs.

Do I even need to wrap this up? My head will be floating and skipping for a while after this interview. I can’t wait for more interviews and thoughts on Living Sexy. They never cease to enchant me.

Many blessings to all. Make sure to watch the awesomely wonderful video below. Thanks for dancing and playing, Tomas!

And to his friends: Be gentle! I made him do it!
